WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO PLAY SILVER CITY GIRLS SOFTBALL

The softball equipment for softball payers has developed over the years. Players have now become accustomed to wearing more than a glove.

Silver City does have some team helmets and facemasks available but the fact that they are used by everyone is less than desirable for many players. Bats are less of an issue particularly at younger ages where team bats are supplied – although some players do prefer specific bats so it is best to see how the player swings and what type of bat they prefer as they progress into the sport.

Players new to the game at any age should look to purchase:

  • Glove
  • Face mask
  • Batting helmet
  • Bat

GLOVE

Glove costs range from $20 and up. Be careful how much you spend early on as your child will grow quickly and may need to purchase a larger glove every couple of seasons until they reach middle school / high school age.

FACE MASK

Sizing a face mask is simple, face masks come in adjustable sizes so its best to purchase them at a sporting goods store where the player can try it on. Face mask costs range from $20-$40 and up.

HELMET

Sizing a Batting Helmet is as easy as a fielding mask. Sizes generally come in either Junior or Adult and most make “sizing kits” that allow for additional padding if they fall between sizes. Batting helmet costs range from $20-$80 and up.

WHAT IS BAT DROP?

Bat weight is measured by the minus or drop weight. Drop weight is the difference between the length and weight of the bat, so a bat that is 30 inches long and has a drop weight of -10 will weigh 20 ounces. The bigger the drop weight is, the lighter the bat will weigh.
